The Armadi Tile is committed to working with vendors who use state-of-the-art quarrying processes. We do this not only to keep the environment clean and workers safe, but also to yield the most tile possible from each quarry (and that keeps prices low!).
Each of our natural stones has unique properties, and requires special processes to unearth them.
Granite As one of the hardest natural stones on earth, granite requires a large amount of energy to quarry. Blasting the stone with explosives has been a common practice for years, but now, blasting in combination with drilling and wiresawing is revolutionizing the granite industry.
Limestone/Travertine & Marble
Quarry workers drill deep into the stone and then insert a wiresaw. The wiresaw is then connected in a loop and tightened. A machine spins the wiresaw and moves backward, keeping the tension high, and cutting the stone in a linear path until a ?loaf? is removed from the quarry.
Slate After working down to a flat base, a large saw is used to make linear ?slices? into the top of the slate, and then it is pried upward either manually or mechanically, depending upon the composition of the slate. Because slate is formed in layers, this is the safest and most economical way to harvest the stone.
